Five Reasons I Love Minor League Baseball
I’ve been thinking a lot about my favorite ways to have that daily dose of America’s pastime. I have determined that, without any hesitation, you cannot deny the sheer awesomeness of the minor leagues. It is one of my favorite ways to enjoy baseball and here are five reasons why.
TICKET PRICES
The average ticket price to a Major League Baseball game during the 2018 season (on the secondary ticket market) stands at $76.00 per ticket, according to Chris Cabrera of Barry’s Ticket Service Inc. That doesn’t account for parking or concessions. An MiLB report from 2015 showed that an adult ticket to a minor league game ranged from $7.03 to $8.05 from Rookie to Triple-A games, respectively. Some clubs, such as the LA Angels affiliate Orem Owlz, also offer discounted tickets to active and retired military.
CHEAP FOOD
In that same 2015 report, MiLB demonstrated that a family of four can get two adult tickets, two child tickets, parking, four hot dogs, two fountain drinks, two beers, and a program for just $64.18. The data was compiled from each of the 160 ballparks around the country.
THEMED EVENTS…LIKE FIREWORKS
Who said you needed an excuse to have a fireworks show? Or, to dress up as your favorite superhero or Star Wars character? MiLB has become the king of just deciding it’s time for a party. The Boston Red Sox Single-A affiliate Greenville Drive feature a weekly fireworks show following every Friday night game…all season long! FAMILY ENVIRONS
Okay, I’m a New York Yankees fan, so I know how ruthless and unruly a crowd can get. I also know that’s not something you often see at MiLB games. In the years I’ve been going to games, I’ve seen all of one fight break out in the stands.
TEAM NAMES
Only in MiLB will you see team names as creative as these: The RubberDucks (Akron-AA-CLE), the Rumble Ponies (Binghamton-AA-NYM), the Chihuahuas (El Paso-AAA-SD), the Lugnuts (Lansing-A-TOR), the Biscuits (Montgomery-AA-TB), and the Baby Cakes (New Orleans-AAA-MIA).
Whether you need a night out with the family or a solid dose of baseball, hit your nearest MiLB game and support the stars of baseball’s future on the proving grounds of America’s heartland.
And, as for me and my house, we will watch baseball.
